Atonement Study
atone: to suffer the penalty of sin THE FALL
- Adam and Eve fell
- as descendants of Adam and Eve we all inherit the effects of the fall
- in our Fallen State, we are subject to temptation and Opposition
TEMPORAL DEATH
-As a result of the fall we will all experience a temporal death.
-temporal death is death of the body
-it is not possible to be reclaimed from temporal death, if it were so it would destroy the great plan of happiness (alma 42:6-9)
SPIRITUAL DEATH
-As a result of the fall, we will all experience temptation
-spiritual deaths being separated from the presence of god
-it is caused by continuous sin. Single sin causes us to be alienated from god -spiritual death is not permanent, it is possible to be reclaimed (alma 42:6-9) -spiritual death is the first and last death, only reclaimable until judgement day (doctrine and covenants 29:11-12)
- we, as fallen man, are UNABLE to save ourselves
- only christ could assume the burden of the fall
Fallen man: (alma 42:2)
WHY ONLY CHRIST
- Only he could overcome death
- He received the results of the fall because of his mortal mother mary - He received Power over death from his father, god (John 5:26)
- he was given Power to do so
- He received Power to redeem man through their repentance (Heleman 5:11) - He maintained this Power because he lived a sinless life
- He was sinless
- He lived a sinless life so he could retain the power of redemption
- He owed nothing to justice because he was sinless (doctrine and covenants 20:22)
- Because he was sinless, had the power of redemption he received from god, he could pay the debt for those who repent
Power of redemption: helaman 5:11
JUSTICE
- Justice is demanded to us
- Christ took the demands upon himself
- He requires justice of us
- On terms of repentance we will forgive us the requirements of justice
THE ATONING SACRAFICE
- It took place in the garden of gethsemane and the cross at calvary
- In the garden christ aligned and submitted his will with God's (Luke 22:42) - He began to take upon himself all the sins of Man.
- Those who do not repent must suffer even as christ suffered (alma 34:16) (doctrine and Covenants 19:17)
- In the garden of gethsemane he suffered and bled from every Pore (Luke 22:44) (doctrine and covenants 19:18)
- He suffered all things, not just sin but temptation, pain, sorrow, Hunger, thirst, etc. (Mosiah 3:7)
- His suffering continued on the cross (1 Nephi 11:33)
Resurrection
- After died he was laid in a tomb until he was resurrected, exercising his inheritance from his father (1 corinthians 15:20)
- All people will be resurrected (2 Nephi 2:5-10)
Suffering
- The demands of justice were take (Mosiah 3:7)
- It can redeem us from spiritual death if we let it (helaman 14:15-17)
Resurrection
- Redeems man from temporal death (Helaman 14:15-17)
- It also Redeems man from spiritual death if we let it (helaman 14:15-17)
- Through the gift of mercy and grace we will all receive the gift of immortality and live forever in glorified resurrected bodies.
- We, though unconditionally are saved from the results of temporal death, are still accountable for our own sins
- By applying the ˋatoning blood of christˋ we can be cleaned and forgiven and be able to return to the presence of god (Mosiah 4:2)
- We must exercise faith in Jesus Christ, repent, be BAPTISED in the name of Christ for the remission of sins, and receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Remission of sins:
REPENTANCE
- it is more than acknowledgement of our wrong doings.
- It is a change of heart and of Mind that gives us a fresh view of God, us, and the World (Mosiah 27:24-26)
- It includes turning away from sin and turning to god for forgiveness (Alma 34: 17-27) (John 8:10-11)
- It ismotivatedbyour loveforgodandthesinceredesiretoObeyhiscommandments (John19:15)
